Hat Yai is Thailand’s fourth largest city, and the largest among the cities in Songkhla Province; with a population of over 800,000 people. It is located in the Southern Gulf coast, near the Malaysian border. The city serves as the main economic center and a shopping destination for both foreigners and locals. Markets, shopping malls and department stores are spread across the city. The relatively high cost of commodities in the city is attributed to the high influx of Singaporean and Malaysian tourists who come in to enjoy the cultural, economic and physical endowments of the region.
